Dealer Showcase: Glossop Caravans

The Caravan & Motorhome Show at Manchester's EventCity presents the North's biggest choice of the latest caravans and motorhomes, presented by the region's leading dealerships. We've delved in to the past to find out a bit more about our dealers and our first Dealer Showcase focusses on Glossop Caravans,  who you can meet on stand 3-21 & 3-27.

How did your company get started?
The company was originally launched in 1976 by three brothers - Tommy, Stan and Brian Laing - on a small plot of land near Droylsden, Manchester. It expanded so quickly that they were soon on the lookout for a second site, and Tommy found one alongside the main A57 at Brookfield, Glossop, Derbyshire.  Shortly after opening the Glossop site, Tommy took the decision to concentrate on the original business at Droylsden while Stan and Brian took over at Brookfield and developed the Glossop Caravans brand.

How has the company grown since you first started?
Our business originally occupied a small site and had only a handful of employees. Now it occupies seven acres on a prime site on the fringe of the beautiful Peak District National Park. We employs a workforce of around 160 people, have a state-of-the-art Service Centre and now have a sister business, Glossop Awnings, selling the very latest awnings and accessories. 

What are the new trends you have noticed in the past five years?
By far the biggest trend is the continuing impact the internet has had, and is continuing to have, on the buying patterns of our customers. We are constantly updating our website and digital tools to respond to these changes and keep us at the cutting edge of developments. 
For example, all our caravans and motorhomes can be seen on a 360 degree axis, a simple to use finance calculator works out the exact cost based on cash or credit and any available model can be reserved online, free of charge, before a final choice is made.

We have also developed the Glossop Awnings App - a brand new browsing and buying tool, which we believe to be the first of its kind offered by the caravan industry. Customers can access it anywhere to view the full range of awnings and accessories, then buy on the move from a mobile phone or tablet. It can be downloaded at Apple and Android stores.

Which brands do you sell? 
We stock all leading caravan brands, including Abbey, Avondale, Bessacarr, Bailey,  Coachman, Compass, Elddis, Hobby, Lunar, Sterling and Swift, and normally have around 600 models on sale. They range in size from two-berth to six-berth with a wide variety of layouts, include both single and twin-axle options and range in price from around £3,000 to £30,000-plus.

Each year we also work closely with Britain's top three manufacturers - Coachman, Elddis and Swift - to create a specially-customised, high-specification Special Edition range, offering a host of top-quality extras and superb value for money.

Which services do you offer?
We offer a one-stop shop for anyone buying a caravan, whatever their budget or ambitions. Our friendly and approachable team of experts pull out all the stops to make the experience as smooth and trouble-free as possible - right from choosing the best model at the right price to preparing it for the drive home.

All buyers have the opportunity to stay overnight in their new caravan in our despatch area to make sure everything is working properly, and that any problems are put right before they tow away. They can also invest in an exclusive Platinum warranty - unique in the caravan industry - offering complete peace of mind and exceptional cover, including water ingress, for used caravans up to 15 years old. Our sister company Glossop Awnings offers a range of more than 50 full and porch options, quality floor coverings and specialist furniture, and our well-stocked accessories shop sells more than 3,000 lines - everything from homeware to barbecues and caravan covers.

And when it comes to aftercare, we are second to none. Fully-trained and experienced professionals in our purpose-built Service Centre use state-of-the-art equipment and the finest products to keep caravans in first-class condition for years to come.
